Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs large, at room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.75 tsp fine salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup red and green candy-coated chocolate pieces such as M&M's

Equipment

  • 1 9x13-inch baking pan

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the long sides.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, packed light brown sugar, and granulated sugar until creamy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs and vanilla until combined, scraping down the bowl as needed.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix just until no dry streaks remain.
  7. Fold in the chocolate chips and candy-coated chocolate pieces.
  8. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan.
  9. Bake for 24 to 28 minutes, until the edges are golden and the center looks just set but remains soft.
  10. Cool completely in the pan, at least 1 hour.
  11. Lift the cookie slab out using the parchment and cut into bars.

Notes

For cleaner cuts, cool the bars completely before slicing. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; these bars can be frozen. For a gluten-free option, use a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour blend.
