Ingredients

  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter divided (1 tablespoon softened and 5 tablespoons melted)
  • 6 white sandwich bread slices
  • 6 baking apples medium (about 2 1/4 pounds), peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 0.5 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp kosher salt

Equipment

  • 1 8-inch square baking dish
  • 1 food processor

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease an 8-inch square baking dish with 1 tablespoon softened butter.
  3. Tear the bread into pieces and pulse in a food processor to make coarse crumbs, about 3 cups.
  4. Toss the crumbs with the 5 tablespoons melted butter.
  5. In a large bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Spread half the crumbs in the baking dish.
  7. Top with the apples, then cover evenly with the remaining crumbs.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Uncover and bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until the apples are tender when pierced with a knife and the top is golden brown.
  10. Let the Apple Betty rest for 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the best texture, keep the bread crumbs coarse. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days; freeze for up to 2 months. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free white sandwich bread.
